Permission is necessary if you are writing a book or developing a product that uses material or excerpts from a Thomas Nelson or Zondervan publication. Please download the Thomas Nelson Permission Request Form or Zondervan Permission Request Form and email it to the address on the form. We strive to answer all requests on a first come, first serve basis and we are currently processing requests at an average turnaround time of 4-6 weeks. Thank you for your patience in this process. This turnaround time can be expedited for a fee of $150.00 and we will complete this within 2 business days (Please type RUSH in the Subject line of your email).

• Incomplete permission requests cannot be considered. Please provide all information or request will not be processed.

How do I get permission to quote from the NKJV, NCV, ICB, The Voice, or The Expanded Bible translation?

Bible Quotation Policy:
NKJV, NCV, ICB, Expanded Bible, and The Voice™
The below applies to all Thomas Nelson Bible translations: New King James Version (NKJV), New Century Version (NCV), International Children’s Bible (ICB), Expanded Bible, or The Voice.

If your use of Scripture does not fall within the Fair Use Guidelines listed below, written permission is required and you will need to submit a formal request. If you need written permission, please download the Bible permission request form and email it to permissions@thomasnelson.com.

Fair Use Guidelines:
(if your use is in compliance with all of the guidelines listed below, you do not require written permission; if your use does not fall within ALL guidelines listed below, you will need to submit a request for written permission)

• No more than 250 verses quoted in total.
• Scripture does not make up more than 25% of the total text.
• Scripture does not account for an entire book of the Bible.
• Scripture is not quoted in a commentary or any other Biblical Reference work.
• All Scripture must be properly cited (see below).
• Your product is not listed below in the “Not Covered by Fair Use” section

Scripture from any of the Thomas Nelson translations may be quoted in any form (written, visual, electronic, or audio) up to two hundred fifty (250) verses or less without written permission, as long as the Scripture does not make up more than 25% of the total text in the work and the Scripture is not being quoted in commentary or another Biblical reference work. If an entire book of the Bible is being reproduced, regardless of verse count, written permission is required.

Not covered by Fair Use:
• Scripture on a product in which the verse stands alone such as artwork, notecards, crafts, novelty products, jewelry. (Fees may apply. Download the Word document at the bottom of this FAQ.)
• Use of charts, maps, illustrations, footnotes, study notes, reference material, and the like. (Fees may apply. Download the Word document at the bottom of this FAQ.)
• Fair use guidelines do not apply to smart phone applications, media platforms, websites, or related digital products. (For this kind of use, download the Word document at the bottom of this FAQ.)
• For all requested musical uses, please complete the permission form (download the PDF document at the bottom of this FAQ).
• If you are interested in using an entire book of the Bible or an entire Bible translation, please contact the licensing department.

Please note:
Churches requesting to use a small selection of material for church bulletins, sermons or classroom use that falls within our “fair use” guidelines, formal written permission is not necessary. Churches may use stand-alone quotations/scriptures in sermons, bulletins, newsletters, or projected in a worship setting without asking written permission provided the translation is correctly cited.

How do I get permission to quote from the NIV, NIrV, and Amplified Bible translations?

These Fair Use Guidelines cover use of text from NIV, NIrV, and Amplified Bible translations. If you are creating a product that uses Bible Scripture/Verses then you must obtain written permission by downloading the permission request form and emailing it to zPermissions@zondervan.com.

Summary of Fair Use Guidelines
(if your use is in compliance with all of the guidelines listed below, you do not require written permission; if your use does not fall within ALL guidelines listed below, you will need to submit a request for written permission)

• No more than 500 verses in total may be reproduced without permission.
• Total verses may not make up more than 25% of the work in which they are quoted.

These guidelines cover quotations in written, visual, electronic or audio format.

Text from the NIV or AMP Bible may be quoted in any form (written, visual, electronic or audio), up to and inclusive of 500 verses or less without written permission, providing the verses quoted do not amount to a complete book of the Bible, nor do verses quoted account for 25% or more of the total text of the work in which they are quoted, and the verses are not being quoted in a commentary or other biblical reference work. This permission is contingent upon an appropriate copyright acknowledgment.

For use of the NIV:
Zondervan is granting permission for the latest edition of the NIV text only (currently 2011), available for personal use at www.zondervan.com, www.biblica.com, www.biblegateway.com and www.youversion.com. Works not Covered by Fair Use

Churches must include copyright notice on each photocopy. If the book is in print and available for purchase this citation must include Zondervan’s website, www.zondervan.com.

Commercial Use:
If you are writing a book or developing a product and would like to request permission to use an excerpt from a Thomas Nelson or Zondervan publication, please provide all of the following information:

• Completed permission request form
• A copy of Nelson or Zondervan book page with excerpt underlined
• A copy of the copyright page from the Nelson or Zondervan book
• A few lines of your material preceding and following the quotes from our book

Fees are determined based on the amount of material used, size of your first printing, retail price of your book and distribution of the material. Fees compensate the authors for the use of their published works.

Non-Commercial Use
If you are requesting to copy material for a church, school, etc., please provide the following information:

• Completed permission request form (Thomas Nelson Permission Request Form or Zondervan Permission Request Form)
• Purpose of your request
• A copy of the book page with excerpt underlined
• Number of copies requested

Use of an entire book or more of one of our Bible translations requires a license and is subject to a fee. For additional information, please contact the permissions department. When you contact us, please include the following information:

• Anticipated publication date
• Anticipated formats and price points for each format
• Anticipated first printing and first year sales figures for each format
• Primary audience
• Primary sales channels (Christian retail, general retail, direct to consumer, etc.)
• Authors for the content you will include in the Bible and/or description of additional content you plan to add to the Bible text
• Other Bibles you have published
• Other Bible translations you have published and/or other licenses you have for other translations
• The printer and typesetter you plan to use
• Details about your editorial process and the experience of your editorial team producing Bibles

What is your Fair Use policy?

Thomas Nelson:
Unfortunately, Thomas Nelson does not have a general “Fair Use” policy. Our commitments to individual authors and contractual obligations prevent us from having a policy that we can apply to all permission inquiries. Instead, permissions are handled on a case-by-case basis. Please review our permissions policies (found on this website). For additional questions, please contact the permissions department.

Note that requests to use more than 250 words from a single source will require additional approvals.

Zondervan:

You may quote a text without written permission if the text and new work meet these four Fair Use Guidelines:
